Drugs charity welcomes new smoking legislation Transform Drug Policy Foundation has welcomed the new legislation prohibiting smoking in enclosed public spaces. Transform spokesperson Steve Rolles said: “Transform is calling for more effective regulation of all drugs based on a public health model and evidence of effectiveness. This applies to currently under-regulated legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, as well as entirely unregulated illegal drugs like cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine. Both require the government to take greater control of production, supply, marketing and use of potentially harmful substances. “Regarding smoking, evidence form other countries who have introduced a ban shows the limited restrictions of personal freedoms are more than outweighed by the public health benefits.” “We are similarly calling for much tighter regulation of alcohol marketing, beginning with effective restrictions on advertising of alcohol products to children and young people, and a ban on alcohol sponsorship of sporting and driving events.” Ends
